Ask the Author: Steve Hart

What would you like readers to know about you?

This book holds a special place in my heart. Even though it was published in February of 2019, I actually wrote the story in 2011. For over seven years, I struggled to find an illustrator to finish the pictures and I submitted the story to publishers to see if they would take it on and assign an illustrator. Unfortunately, no one I contacted was willing or able to help. Discouraged, about a year ago I’d all but given up on my dream of being a published author. That is, until last Christmas when my wife surprised me by working with a girl at our church to get the illustrations finished and the story published. She recorded my all too real Christmas morning reaction on a video that we have up on YouTube that you can access here

More about me, I’m a dedicated husband of ten years to my wife, Stacy. Together we are raising three precious kids; Addisyn, Kellan, and August. I am currently living out my dream life as a daddy to those kiddos in Delaware. I enjoy being a present, creative, nurturing, funny, and selfless dad. My favorite things include “punny” jokes, designing basement and backyard obstacle courses, and #dadtricks in the kitchen before dinner. I also serve in the Air Force Reserve as an aircraft mechanic on the C-5 Galaxy.

What is Big Plane Small Plane about for those who haven’t read it?

Book Description: Everything was going as planned at The Great Plane Show until the main event. The show’s biggest and strongest plane, Big Plane, climbed high in the air then unexpectedly sent out a call for help to all the planes down below. No plane in the Great Plane Show was as big or strong as Big Plane. What could anyone do to help the best plane of them all? Find out if a small plane with a big heart had the courage to go to new heights to save his struggling hero.

Book Summary: Big Plane Small Plane is about how the size of our stature and the greatness of our abilities can’t measure the strength of our hearts.

What has been your inspiration for writing Big Plane Small Plane?

My love for children and airplanes inspired me to write Big Plane Small Plane.

What was your favorite scene or part to write?

My favorite scene is when Small Plane has just left the runway to go help Big Plane whose engines are about to fail. When he was going down the runway, everyone was doubting that he would make it to Big Plane, but, “Small went on without delay and heard their voices fade away.” I love this part of the book because there will be people in our lives who doubt themselves and doubt us, but, if our heart is in the right place, as we climb higher toward our goals their voices eventually fade off into the distance.

What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?

Dr. Seuss was my main inspiration for becoming a children’s book author.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?

Surround yourself with people who support you and care about your dream. Writing can become lonely when you’re doing it on your own. Find a community of people who believe in you and be willing to help others.
