Ask the Author: A.D.H Thomas

What would you like readers to know about you?

I would like my readers to know that while I write, I also do a lot of other things. I’m a designer, and artist, a musician, I work a normal job as well as my own agency. And, with all that I still find time to try and achieve what I want to.

What is your book about for those who haven’t read it?

My debut book Niles Myde, it’s a story about an ex criminal psychologist who unwittingly discovers a patient, named Simon, with a traumatic past. Eventually, there are connections to an active murder investigation which has rocked the city. As Myde unravels Simon’s dark past he is thrown into the dark underbelly his psyche. Eventually facing a confrontation that will bring him to the brink of destruction, and salvation.

What has been your inspiration for writing it?

I love dark, brooding characters. I like the idea of delivering characters that are confrontational, but entices the ready to continue. Hannibal Lecter, Mr. Brooks, and Patrick Bateman are all characters that do this for me. I hope one day people read my books and feel a similar pull towards my darker characters.

What was your favorite scene or part of your book to write?

I would have to say the ending. It is what I started with, it’s the whole wild up to that one moment. It’s the ending that makes the book.

What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?

Michael Crichton – I love Jurassic Park.

J.R.R. Tolkien – Lord of the rings is one of the first full book trilogies I ever read.

Chuck Palahniuk – mores for the film adaption of Fight Club, I liked the book, but I loved the film.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?

Start writing, it took me 8 years to get my first novel finished and published. I’m going to have at least two more completed in the next 10-12 months. Once you get that first one out it’s like you get supercharged to keep going, so just start.
