Ask the Author: Grace Herbst
What would you like readers to know about you?
Good question. Let’s see, I’m a dog lover and the love of my life right now is my beloved Westie mix, Molly. I may be a YA author, but I love reading suspense and thriller novels. A few of favorite authors are Allison Brennan, Lisa Scottoline and Melinda Leigh. And even though I write about tough subjects, I still believe in happy endings.
What is your book about for those who haven’t read it?
Brave New Girl is about a young teenage girl who is just starting her junior year of high school in a new town. New beginnings after a rebellious sophomore year. However, her past soon catches up with her. And she starts to wonder if she is truly better off in her new town or she should return to her former home in the city.
What has been your inspiration for writing it?
The challenges of being a teenager in high school with trying to fit in with peers. The balance between schoolwork, after school job and extracurricular activities. First love. The list goes on and on.
What was your favorite scene or part of your book to write?
I’m a proud pantser so I think I enjoy writing the beginning the most. I never knew where the story was going to take me and I loved that feeling.
What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?
I have loved reading books since I was little. One of the authors who first inspired me was Ann M. Martin, the author of the Babysitter’s Club series. I enjoyed reading her books over and over again and it made me want to write a book series about a group of friends as well.
What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?
There’s a lot of advice I can give, but my favorite piece of advice is to keep writing. Whether you want to go the traditional route or self-published, don’t give up. Keep going. If your first book fails, write, write again. Your readers will find you.
