Ask the Author: Tiana Smith
What would you like readers to know about you?
Hey, I’m Tiana! I’m a pretty laid-back person and my favorite hobbies are chilling at home, watching movies, and hanging out with my family. I like anything funny or romantic, which is why my books are all rom coms.
What is your book about for those who haven’t read it?
I currently have two books out, so I’ll talk about my most recent one which just released in January. How To Speak Boy is an adaptation of You’ve Got Mail, mixed with high school speech and debate. Two rivals start to fall in love through anonymous notes and have to learn to put aside their differences or perhaps lose everything. It’s flirty, fluffy, and basically an all-around “feel good” book that I’m so in love with!
What has been your inspiration for writing it?
I can’t get enough of enemies-to-lovers stories, and I really wanted to write something that involved speech and debate because it was such a big part of my life growing up. I really wanted to capture the feeling of first love and complicated relationships.
What was your favorite scene or part of your book to write?
The first kiss scene was my favorite! They insult each other before kissing, and it was so fun to write their banter and playful personalities.
What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?
SO MANY. I think if you want to be an author, you have to read widely. Like I mentioned before, I really love romantic comedies, so a couple of my favorite authors are Kasie West and Janette Rallison.
What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?
Keep trying! The only way you will not make it is if you give up. Publishing is hard but keep at it. Keep learning, keep improving, and keep working. Eventually, you’ll get there. We all had to start somewhere.
Where my books can be purchased: Basically anywhere! I love independent bookstores, but they’re also available in Barnes & Noble, Deseret Book, Amazon, etc.
