Ask the Author: Laura Kemp

What would you like readers to know about you?

I am a Michigan author who is very proud of my home state. I think the beauty of my natural surroundings deeply affects my writing. I want everyone to fall in love with the outdoors like I did as a child, and I want to convey a love and respect for nature in all that I do.

What is your book about for those who haven’t read it?

It is about a young woman’s search for the father that abandoned her when she was twelve years old. She sees his picture in a newspaper ten years later and takes off to a mysterious, northern Michigan town to find him. Once there, she quickly realizes that nothing is as it seems and that the past is not only alive, but deadly.

What has been your inspiration for writing it?

I lived in northern Michigan for a summer and a guy I worked with, who ended up as a character in the book, dared me to write a story about him. It kind of grew from there and took on a life of its own.

What was your favorite scene or part of your book to write?

I love the scenes between Justine and her brother, Adam. He is based on a student I had with autism and the love I felt for him shows in this book.  I just adore his character and kind of ‘step into’ Justine’s shoes whenever they are together in a scene.

What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?

I love Anita Shreve because she wrote with such delicacy. She set a scene very well, and her New England settings are just as important as my Michigan ones are. I also love spooky reads, like Stephen King and Dean Koontz. I’m also a sucker for a good romance and used to read a lot of LaVyrle Spencer.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?

Go for it! Put time and effort into your craft and then just write the very best book you can. And don’t write for a readership or a market. When you do get your book published, your reader will find you. If you sell out, if you don’t write the book that feels right to you, you will never be able to promote it. Make sure it’s something you can stand behind one hundred percent.
