Ask the Author: Kelly Siskind

What would you like readers to know about you?

Fun facts: I was a competitive downhill ski racer growing up. I also worked as a cook for a number of years and was a high school art teacher!

What is your book about for those who haven’t read it?

New Orleans Rush follows stage-fright sufferer Beatrice Baker, who is coerced into working as an onstage magician’s assistant to repay a debt. She, of course, ends up falling for her surly boss.

What has been your inspiration for writing it?

For New Orleans Rush, I was inspired by a song.

Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” has become an iconic country tune. Not only does the songstress belt out every woman’s post-breakup angst with a set of pipes that rival North America’s drainage systems, but she creates riveting visual images. Through that song, women can envision themselves exacting revenge, feeling powerful and taking control of their lives, without having to lift a finger. It’s an inspiring and uplifting girl-power song.

The first thing to tickle my brain was imagining a heartbroken heroine hearing those lyrics. I pictured her feeling vindicated, then having the same urge to wreak havoc on her cheating boyfriend’s car. That plot bunny got my thoughts jumping. What if she damaged the wrong man’s car? What if she was down on her luck and couldn’t pay for the damages? What if the owner of said car was the hero and needed some sort of free labor?

That ended up being the meet-cute between Huxley and Beatrice.

What was your favorite scene or part of your book to write?

For sure that opening scene. I’d had it in my mind for so long before I wrote the book. It was a blast getting it down.

What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?

The first romance I read was Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire. I got hooked on romance after that and was highly influenced by the Christina Lauren writing duo.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?

Find a community of writers to support you. It’s a tough path with lots of rejection. Having like-minded people who understand what you’re going through makes all the difference.

A small-town girl at heart, Kelly moved from the city to enjoy the charm of northern Ontario. When she’s not out hiking with her husband or home devouring books, you can find her, notepad in hand, scribbling down one of the many plot bunnies bouncing around in her head. Her novels have been published internationally.
