Ask the Author: Cameron Lund

What would you like readers to know about you?

Hi everyone! My name is Cameron Lund and I’m the author of YA romcom THE BEST LAID PLANS, which just released on April 7th. Releasing a debut novel during a pandemic is not what I expected and has been tough, but I’m so thankful to all the readers who have reached out to me after reading the book! That has been the best part so far and has made this all feel real (even though I haven’t been able to see my book on a shelf in a bookstore yet).

What is your book about for those who haven’t read it?

THE BEST LAID PLANS is about a high school senior who feels like she’s falling behind the rest of her friend group. She’s interested in having sex, but she doesn’t know if she’s quite ready yet and there’s no one she’s into in that way–until she meets a senior at the local college who acts like he just might be interested in her. But she lets her insecurities get the best of her and ends up asking her best guy friend Andrew to sleep with her and help her become a pro so she can impress her crush. It’s about learning to go at your own pace and feel confident in your own decisions!

What has been your inspiration for writing it?

Like Keely, I felt the same way when I was in high school. It felt like everyone around me was in this club that I wasn’t a part of yet (and that I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to be a part of!) But it’s so hard not to compare yourself to your friends when it feels like you’re the odd one out. I wanted to write about that experience. There’s so much media about guys trying to lose their virginity and not as much about the female experience. I wanted to write something that showed the honest, awkward conversations I was having with my friends at 17! And of course, I wanted to write it as a rom com because it’s my favorite genre.

What was your favorite scene or part of your book to write?

I like to write all of the kissing scenes! I don’t want to get too spoilery, but there are a few different kissing scenes in this book that I love–including one that may or may not take place in a bathtub.

What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?

My favorite favorite author when I was a kid was Gail Carson Levine. I loved Ella Enchantedthe Wish, and The Two Princesses of BamarreIt was after reading all these books that I decided I wanted to try to become a writer too. Stephanie Perkins’ Anna and the French Kiss was the book that inspired me to become a YA romance author. I wanted to write a book that could make someone feel the way that book made me feel.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?

I think the best thing you can do to become a better writer is to read! Read a ton in your genre and also in other genres too. There’s always more you can learn. I also think finding critique partners is really helpful. If you have a trusted friend you can swap drafts with, it helps you edit and also thickens your skin and teaches you how to take criticism (there are a lot of rejections in this industry!). And then honestly, the most important part is to just force yourself to finish. I started so many projects before I finally finished one. Your first draft can be garbage. Just get it done and then you can make it better!
