Ask the Author: Briana Morgan
What would you like readers to know about you?
I’m a horror author and playwright who has written several books and plays, including Unboxed, Livingston Girls, Reflections, Touch: A One-Act Play, and Blood and Water. I’m also a proud member of the Horror Writers Association.
What is your book about for those who haven’t read it?
In Unboxed, Greg Zipper is a paranormal vlogger whose livelihood relies on his online popularity. When a fight between him and his girlfriend goes viral for all the wrong reasons, Greg purchases a dark web mystery box in hopes of restoring his audience’s faith in him and hitting one million subscribers. But when Greg opens the box, he gets much more than he bargained for, including a Boxer who’s determined to stop him from taking his loved ones for granted. Now Greg must do all he can to stop the Boxer, or else he’ll lose his livelihood—along with the woman he loves.
What has been your inspiration for writing it?
A few YouTube deep dives led me to write Unboxed, as well as my love for Black Mirror, The Twilight Zone, and Inside No. 9. I stumbled on some dark web mystery box unboxing videos, and that got me thinking about how something like that could go wrong. I thought about how desperate a vlogger might be to hit one million subs… and Unboxed was born.
What was your favorite scene or part of your book to write?
I love a lot of Greg’s lines in the book, but my all-time favorite scene is the climax/end of Act One. It’s so spooky and so fun and I can’t wait to see it staged someday. That’s all I can say about it without spoiling!
What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?
Like many other horror authors, I’ve loved Stephen King for ages. In recent years, lots of women in horror have inspired me to explore my darker interests: Gemma Amor, Hailey Piper, Gwendolyn Kiste, and Sonora Taylor.
What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?
Do it! Don’t spend too much time planning because that can become procrastination. Also, write whatever you want and have fun with it.
