Ask the Author: Lani Forbes

What would you like readers to know about you?

I’m a huge nerd! I was actually voted “Book Worm” in my school’s yearbook hall of fame. I was always the kind of person who checked my fandom sites daily and waited in line at midnight for book and movie releases! Books were always an escape for me, a way to leave the pain and chaos of this world behind for just a little bit and escape into an entirely new one. It’s my hope that my books do the same for you!

What is your book about for those who haven’t read it?

My book is based on ancient Mesoamerican mythology and follows Mayana, a descendent of the goddess of water, who is forced into a competition against other daughters descended from the gods to win the emperor’s heart. The ones not chosen to be his wife will be sacrificed to the gods!

What has been your inspiration for writing it?

I come from a background that always had a lot of “rules” and expected you to fit into a certain box. I often wrestled with my spirituality and what I believed, which I think is normal for everyone to go through at some point. I really wanted to be able to be free to ask questions and find answers for myself, so I think I poured a lot of that into the story. At its core, the story is really about Mayana’s self discovery and her struggle with being who everyone wants her to be or following her heart.

What was your favorite scene or part of your book to write?

There is a really tense scene towards the end where Mayana has to make a choice that might cost her everything. Will she follow what her heart tells her or will she sacrifice her heart for the sake of meeting everyone’s expectations? I also really liked writing the garden scene in the pool, if you know what I mean hehe!

What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?

The first book series that whisked me away to another world was the Harry Potter series. It really taught me to love reading and fantasy in particular. After that, I got into Meg Cabot’s Mediator series. Eventually, I just wanted to read everything I could get my hands on! I didn’t seriously consider writing books myself until I read the Twilight series in college and was inspired by Stephenie Meyer’s journey to become an author! It made me feel like I could do it too!

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?

Read! Read! Read! Read the books you want to write, but also read craft books. There is so much information out there available that really helps you grow as an author. Reading the books I wanted to write helped me get an idea of what inspired me and what spoke to me as well as expectations of the genre. I also tell aspiring authors to keep a growth mindset. If you worry that you aren’t a great writer yet, that’s totally okay! You CAN learn and grow! We are all always growing and learning and changing. Even the best authors have editors! Listen and be willing to learn from every mistake you make and never stop moving forward.
