Ask the Author: Joe Gatto

What would you like readers to know about you?

I’m passionate about a lot of causes, one of them being animal rescue. My eyes were open to it later in life and my first-hand experience with adopting dogs from shelters instead of shopping for them has been super rewarding.

What is your book about for those who haven’t read it?

It’s a coffee table book that is a mixture of my photography, personal stories from my childhood growing up in an Italian household, and most importantly, my fabulous dogs affectionately known as The Gatto Pups. Each of them are named after an Italian dessert.

What has been your inspiration for writing it?

It started off as a project to keep me busy during the pandemic and quickly turned into a passion project. As I was working on it, I realized quickly that I had a lot more to say than I had originally thought and a lot more to show than I originally imagined. I ended up being really proud of the fun read that I put together.

What was your favorite scene or part of your book to write?

I really enjoyed the parts of the book where I spoke of my daughter and her relationship with our dogs. I highlight the canine which I believe made her a “dog person”, Zeppole. He was an adorable senior that we had adopted and she fell in love with as she realized she was surrounded by so many dogs in her home.

What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?

None. I’m not really a reader. Although I do enjoy James Murray’s Awakened series.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?

Don’t over think it. Sit down and start typing or pick up a pen and start writing. What I found was a jumble mess of words and incoherent thoughts quickly mold themselves into your story once you start letting it out of your mind
