Ask the Author: Trish Doller

What would you like readers to know about you?

My big three passions in life are writing, traveling, and rescue dogs. It’s entirely coincidence that FLOAT PLAN is kind of the intersection of those three things, but now that I’m standing here, it makes complete sense!

What is your book about for those who haven’t read it?
FLOAT PLAN is about Anna, a young woman who goes to sea after the death of her fiancé in the sailboat they were meant to sail together. Anna quickly learns that she’s out of her depth and enlists the help of Keane, a former competitive sailor. As they make their way through the Caribbean together, Anna and Keane help each other chart new courses for their lives.

What has been your inspiration for writing it?
FLOAT PLAN doesn’t have one single source of inspiration. It comes from a love of sailing, incurable wanderlust, an article I read about an amputee soldier determined to get back on a snowboard, endless curiosity about the Caribbean, Colin Farrell’s Irish accent, and Anna Begins by the Counting Crows. All of those things spun themselves together into a story.

What was your favorite scene or part of your book to write?

My favorite scene to write was when Anna truly confronts her grief on a deserted island in the Bahamas. It was a difficult scene to write because I wanted to really capture her pain, but I find that the difficult scenes are usually my favorite ones to write.

What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?

A lot of my early, unpublished writing–that I did just for myself–was inspired by romance novels. But when I read 13 LITTLE BLUE ENVELOPES by Maureen Johnson, a light bulb went off in my head. I hadn’t known I wanted to write for young adults, but when I started working on my first YA novel, it felt like coming home.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?

Read books in the genre you want to write. Read books outside that genre. Read outside your comfort zone. Read books you don’t like. Read (and reread) books you love. And just keep writing.

FLOAT PLAN is coming 03.02.21 from St. Martin’s Griffin. My young adult novels are available now, wherever you buy books.
