Ask the Author: Bethany Mangle
What would you like readers to know about you?
This is my debut novel, so it’s really a dream come true for me. I’m not sure that I really do anything that interesting in my personal life. My days are full of taking funny pictures of my dog, playing video games, asking my husband odd trivia questions for no reason, and occasionally making questionable cakes.
What is your book about for those who haven’t read it?
PREPPED is about a girl named Becca Aldaine who has grown up in a community of doomsday preppers. She doesn’t believe in it, so she’s planning to run away to college, leaving behind her little sister, Katie, who is independent enough to not buy into the prepping either. But then there’s an unexpected accident and Katie starts to believe that the world is unsafe. Becca teams up with Roy, her prepper-approved boyfriend, to plot an escape and protect her sister at the same time.
What has been your inspiration for writing it?
I was watching an emergency drill at work when I started to think about what it would be like to emphasize preparedness over everything else in your life. I’d heard a little bit about doomsday prepping in the past, so I decided to look into it. After that, I knew I wanted to write a story about a girl who grows up in that type of environment without necessarily believing in it.
What was your favorite scene or part of your book to write?
I love to write beginnings, and PREPPED is no exception. It’s so much fun getting to introduce a cast of characters and build the world around them.
What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?
I’ve always wanted to be a writer ever since I was a young child, so I can’t point to any specific books or authors as inspiration. It was just the collective experience of growing up around books and having the opportunity to read widely. I was hooked.
What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?
I’d tell aspiring authors that it’s okay to experiment and fumble. I didn’t know what I wanted to write immediately. I tried a few different styles and genres before I landed on young adult contemporary and realized I had found the right fit for me.
PREPPED can be purchased at your favorite store. Lemuria Books in Jackson, MS is my local indie and will have limited signed copies available.
