Ask the Author: Chelsea Mueller

What would you like readers to know about you?

I love writing both fight scenes and kissing scenes because they’re a great way to dive into character and chemistry. So, if you love high-stakes emotional scenes, I’m your person!

What is your book about for those who haven’t read it?

My next release is PROM HOUSE, and it’s a YA thriller packed with murder, kissing, and twists. Here’s the short blurb:

Ten people share a prom house at the Jersey Shore for the weekend. Every one of them has a secret . . . and when they begin to die one by one, panic ensues. Could somebody’s prom date also be . . . a killer?

PROM HOUSE releases May 4 and will be available at your favorite bookseller. Most preorder links are available here: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/635966/prom-house-by-chelsea-mueller/

…but if you’d like a signed copy, please preorder from Murder by the Book: https://www.murderbooks.com/chelsea-mueller-signed-preorder

What has been your inspiration for writing it?

I wanted to write a snappy, fun book that got straight to the good stuff—kissing and killing, obvs.—and was delighted to be part of the first-year launch of the Underlined Paperbacks imprint that’s all about the paperbacks you can devour in a single sitting. Hopefully PROM HOUSE hits those notes for others!

What was your favorite scene or part of your book to write?

My favorite scene to write is a BIG twist. I’m not going to ruin it for you, but it involves a dead body. As a backup, non-spoiler favorite, I really loved getting to describe the heroine Kylie’s prom dress. The color and the bodice make me wish I could go back in time to wear that dress to my own prom!

What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?

The time I remember becoming a voracious reader was in middle school when I checked out every single yellow-backed Nancy Drew book from the library. At the same time, my mother had provided me with a boxed set of The Lord of the Rings. Those two formative series explain a lot about the kind of writer I am—mysteries, magic, and a surprising amount of food.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?

Stick with it. Getting to the end of writing a novel is hard no matter how many times you’ve done it. Just know that the perseverance pays off, and keep moving forward.
